The 49ers were arguably the team of the 80s , where they won 4 of their championships. The dynasty of the 80s and 90s included great hall of famers and future hall of famers such as three time Super Bowl MVP Joe Montana, perennial Pro Bowler Ronnie Lott, all time highest career quarterback rating holder Steve Young, and career touchdown leader Jerry Rice. Also memorable moments such as The Catch , which was a last minute, game winning, touchdown grab by Dwight Clark in the NFC championship game against the Dallas Cowboys. After the play, Dallas Ed Too Tall Jones said to Montana, You just beat America s Team, with Montana replying Well, you can watch the Super Bowl on TV with the rest of America. 49er fans laughed with appreciation at this line. The 49ers won that game 28 27 and went on to win Super Bowl XVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.
In 1990 during their quest for a three peat , the 49ers lost in the conference championship, 15 13, to the New York Giants after Joe Montana suffered an injury to his throwing elbow in the fourth quarter. He would miss almost two full seasons, only to come back to start the second half of a Monday night game against the Detroit Lions where he looked as if he never missed a snap.
By the end of the season, partly fueled by media hype, was the biggest quarterback controversy in football history, between Montana and Steve Young, who had lead the team to the conference championship game the previous year. Montana asked for and was granted a trade to the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 1993 season. Despite owner Eddie DeBartolo wanting Montana to stay and start. Montana was later quoted as saying, If I had stayed and started, there would have been problems. If I had stayed and Steve Young had started, there would have been problems. Many fans were furious to see Montana leave but as the years went by they all grew to love Young.
Young led the 49ers to the third straight conference championship against the Cowboys and went on to win 38 28 in 1994. The 49ers steam rolled the San Diego Chargers, becoming the first team to win a record five Super Bowls. With a record 6 touchdown passes, Steve Young was named the game s MVP. Their run of 5 Super Bowl wins in 14 seasons (1981 1994) solidified them as one of the all time greatest NFL teams. The next three seasons would see the Green Bay Packers knock the 49ers out of the playoffs, but the 49ers went on to have 16 straight winning seasons, all with 10 or more wins keeping 49er s fans cheering them on year after year.
